Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

A headstone company that works across New Jersey must know the regulations at hundreds of individual cemeteries. Headstone Company Guide does. Every cemetery has its own published requirements covering maximum height, base dimensions, permitted stone types, and approved finishes. Before we finalize any design, we contact the cemetery directly and confirm the current requirements. This knowledge — accumulated over 80 years of work in New Jersey — is a core part of the service a skilled headstone company provides.

Foundation Requirements

Many families are surprised to learn that headstone installation involves significant foundation work. Upright headstones in New Jersey require concrete footings extending below the frost line — typically 30 to 42 inches. A headstone company that handles installation as part of its service coordinates this foundation work, manages the schedule with cemetery staff, and sets the stone correctly. Headstone Company Guide handles all of this in-house. No separate contractor is needed.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

New Jersey's headstone companies serve a diverse, multi-faith population. Headstone Company Guide has produced Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox Christian, and Protestant memorials throughout our history. Religious cemeteries carry specific requirements — directional facing for Jewish monuments, crucifix restrictions in some Catholic sections, specific cross forms for Orthodox traditions. Our craftsmen carve in Hebrew, Russian Cyrillic, and Polish Latin in-house. We serve families in English, Russian, and Polish.

Headstone Maker / Company

What separates headstone companies from one another is where and how the stone is actually made. Many businesses that present themselves as headstone companies are, in practice, resellers: they take the family's order, pass it to a production facility, and manage the delivery. Headstone Company Guide is a different kind of company. Our Morris County workshop in Madison, NJ is where every memorial is designed, carved, and finished by our own craftsmen. When you commission a headstone from Headstone Company Guide, the people you speak with are the people who will make your stone. Over 80 years of operation in Morris County have built a workshop where craft knowledge is deep, accumulated, and continuously applied. Upright, flat, slant, companion, veteran, and faith-specific headstones are all within our regular production. Materials are American-made granite — gray, black, rose, mahogany — with multiple finish options. Inscriptions, portrait engravings, religious symbols, and decorative elements are all carved by hand. No outsourcing. No imported stone. One American family business producing memorials for New Jersey families.

Granite Options

Headstone Company Guide's granite selection represents the full range of American-made stone available for New Jersey headstones. Classic gray granite is the most widely used material in NJ cemeteries, with a warm, understated quality suitable for all settings. Polished black granite provides exceptional contrast for portrait engravings and fine inscription work. Rose granite offers warmth and individuality. Mahogany granite has a rich, deep quality suited to traditional monuments. All materials are sourced domestically. Families can view samples at our showroom or receive materials information remotely.

Custom Design Process

The full service a quality headstone company provides goes from consultation through installation without handoffs to outside parties. Headstone Company Guide's six-step process covers consultation, design proofing, material selection, hand-carving, finishing and inspection, and installation — all managed by our own team. Cemetery coordination, foundation preparation, and stone placement are all handled in-house. Families have a single point of contact throughout the process. This complete accountability is what distinguishes a craftsman-operated headstone company from a retail headstone reseller.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Headstone Company Guide's six-step headstone process has been refined in Morris County, NJ over 80 years of continuous operation. Step one is the consultation: a direct conversation at our Madison showroom or by phone to understand the family's wishes, the design direction, and the cemetery's requirements. Step two is design proofing: our team produces a scaled visual proof showing inscription layout, imagery, stone shape, and surface finish, which the family reviews and approves. Step three is material selection: American-made granite is chosen by color and finish and confirmed against the cemetery's regulations. Step four is hand-carving: every element of the design — lettering, portraits, symbols, borders — is executed by hand in our Morris County workshop. Step five is finishing and inspection: the stone is surface-treated and reviewed by a senior craftsman. Step six is installation: our team handles foundation preparation, delivery, and stone placement, coordinating directly with the cemetery. Over 80 years of practice. One company for every step.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“We compared several headstone companies before choosing Headstone Company Guide. The difference was clear — they made the stone themselves, they knew every cemetery we mentioned, and the finished memorial was everything a family could hope for.” — Thomas, Bergen County NJ
